The Memorable Decibel: Decibel (2022) Movie Review

Decibel is a 2022 South Korean action-drama film directed by Hwang In Ho, and starring Lee Jong Suk, Cha Eun Woo, Kim Rae Won and Lee Min Ki. It creates a tense atmosphere from start to finish. This is a drama-action movie about a noise detonator bomb terror carried out for revenge. This bomb terror is aimed at naval chief Kang Do Young (played by Kim Rae Won) which resulted in the death of half the crew of a South Korean training submarine. Kang Do Young must face bombs placed in various crowded places while racing against time. This movie actually contains minimal action scenes because there are only a few intense fight scenes. The title Decibel is based on a type of bomb with a noise detector that will explode faster if it exceeds 100db. Nonetheless, I believe the drama about the crew and tragedy is much more memorable and emotional than the terror of the bomb itself.

Lee Jong Suk is able to convey the character’s inner turmoil and motivations without resorting to over-the-top villainy. Kim Rae Won’s performance as the naval chief is equally impressive, showing a calm and collected demeanor in the face of danger. The supporting cast also delivers a lighter mood to the film, particularly Jung Sang Hoon as the reporter and Kim Rae Won’s helper in his mission.

The cinematography is top-notch, and the use of slow motion sequences and camera angles adds an extra level of excitement to the already intense action scenes. The film is so excellent in executing various scenes smoothly, especially the transition of scenes from current happenings to a flashback scene. The film’s pacing is well done, with a steady build-up of tension that culminates in a satisfying climax. However, the film does suffer from some plot holes and contrivances that may leave some viewers scratching their heads. Additionally, some of the supporting characters are underdeveloped, which can make it difficult to connect with them on an emotional level.

Decibel has the same theme of bomb terror with another movie titled Hard Hit. The difference lies in the type of bomb used. In Decibel, the bomb used is a bomb that can detect sound, while in Hard Hit it is a motion detection bomb. The tension was more intense in Hard Hit, because it was clearly depicted how the character can't go anywhere and just sit quietly in the car seat while negotiating with the terrorist. Whereas in Decibel, the characters are still given the opportunity to move and even run to disable the bomb. Instead, the most heartfelt scene is the flashback of the submarine sinking tragedy. However, Decibel and Hard Hit both have endings that leave the audience wondering why. It also left me confused and feeling like the end of the story is a cliffhanger.

Overall, Decibel is an entertaining drama-action that showcases the talent of its cast and crew. The film’s intense action and drama sequences are enough to satisfy fans of the genre.
